The Song of out of Town Taverns

In altri no.

The song of out of town taverns

Sono ancora aperte come un tempo le osterie di fuori porta, | The out-of-town taverns are still open
ma la gente che ci andava a bere fuori o dentro è tutta morta: | but folks going there to drink, inside or outside, are all dead
qualcuno è andato per età, qualcuno perchè già dottore | somebody died of age, somebody because he became a doctor
| seeking his maturity, he got married, is making a career, and it’s a worse kind of death

Cadon come foglie gli ubriachi sulle strade che hanno scelto, | the winos fall like leaves on the paths they chose
delle rabbie antiche non rimane che una frase o qualche gesto,| only a quote or a few gestures remain, from ancient rages
non so se scusano il passato per giovinezza o per errore, | I can’t say if the excuse their past in the name of youth, or of their mistakes
non so se ancora desto in loro, se m’ incontrano per forza, la curiosità o il timore…| I can’t say, if they are forced to meet me, if I arouse in them curiosity or fear

Io ora mi alzo tardi tutti i giorni, tiro sempre a far mattino, | Me, I get up late every day, I always go to bed very late
le carte poi il caffè della stazione per neutralizzare il vino, | the playing cards, and then coffee at the train station, to neutralize wine
|I have no utopia to accomplish: staying in bed the day after is possibly my only goal

Si alza sempre lenta come un tempo l’alba magica in collina, | the magic dawn slowly rises in the hills, slow as it used to be
| but when I watch it I no longer feel what I used to feel
Ladri e profeti di futuro mi hanno portato via parecchio, | Thieves and prophets of the future took a lot away from me
| the day is always a bit gloomier, maybe because it’s history, maybe because I get older

Ma le strade sono piene di una rabbia che ogni giorno urla più forte, | but the streets are full of a rage which every day is screaming louder
| the flowers wilted and left just symbols of death
Dimmi se son da lapidare se mi nascondo sempre più, | tell me whether I should be lapidated, if I keep hiding more and more
| but everyone has his stone ready and the first one, don’t deny it, would be thrown by you

I am more famous than when you used to know me
I no longer have friends, I have an audience who listens to the songs you used to believe in
e forse ridono di me, ma in fondo ho la coscienza pura, | and maybe they laugh of me, but -in the end- my conscience is clean
non rider tu se dico questo, ride chi ha nel cuore l’odio e nella mente la paura…| Don’t you laugh if I say this, those who laugh have hatred in their heart, and fear in their mind

Ma non devi credere che questo abbia cambiato la mia vita, | but you should not believe that this changed my life
| It’s some tiny thing from yesterday, which tomorrow is already gone
Son sempre qui a vivermi addosso, ho dai miei giorni quanto basta, | I keep on keeping on, I got what I need from my days
| I have what I can from glory, i.e. something which will go away soon, almost like money in my pocket

Non lo crederesti ho quasi chiuso tutti gli usci all’avventura, | You wouldn’t believe it, I almost closed all doors to adventure
| not because I squared up, but for boredom or fear
I don’t spend nights in desperation because of what I did or what I had:
| what’s done is done, and my only remorse is for the opportunities I lost

Sono ancora aperte come un tempo le osterie di fuori porta, | The out-of-town taverns are still open
ma la gente che ci andava a bere fuori o dentro è tutta morta: | but folks going there to drink, inside or outside, are all dead
qualcuno è andato per formarsi, chi per seguire la ragione, | somebody went to get trained, some to follow their reason
| others because they are fed up of playing, drinking wine, getting in disgrace, and that’s a much worse kind of death…

Do Re-7 Mi-7
Sono ancora aperte come un tempo
Sol7 Do
le osterie di fuori porta
Re-7 Mi-7
Sol7 Do
fuori o dentro è tutta morta.
Fa Sol7 Do Mi-7
Qualcuno è andato per età,
Fa Sol7 Do Mi-7
qualcuno perché già dottore
Fa Sol7 Do
e insegue una maturità:
Re-7 Mi-7
si è sposato fa carriera
