Semproniano (Southern Tuscany) hosts one of the entries included in the official national register of rural landscapes. This institution’s mission is to protect elements of identity which have characterized the econonmy and the culture of a territory. The area next to Semproniano known as ‘Fibbianello’ received recognition for the historical persistence of olive trees.
In an historical phase where many old olive groves are being abandoned, and the international production of the so called “green gold” is drifting towards a super-intensive proctice, the existence in Fibbianello of 32,000 huge and very old olive trees represents for the rural hiker an irresistible attraction. The cultural association La Piazzoletta and the Municipality of Semproniano have worked a lot to promote this site, which is right next to Rocchette di Fazio, where our festival will take place. For those coming to the festival paying a visit to this lesser-known rural heritage will not be difficult.

The First Cross-Border Maremme Hiking Festival is glad to have Marco D’Aureli as one of its guests. He is an anthropologist and the director of the museo del brigantaggio di Cellere and the museo della terra in Latera. Marco will tell us about his projects about cultural hiking: trails connecting small village museums or telling parts of the social history of Maremma, such as the Bandit trail in Cellere.
Marco is also a great expert of another cultural expression which unites various areas of maremma: ottava rima poetry. Each year in Latera the best impromptu poets from central Italy gather in Laters.
You may read (in Italian) about Marco and his museums both in A piedi nel far west and in the emons guide emons 111 luoghi delle Maremme che devi proprio scoprire. But, most of all, you may listen to his stories on Sunday June 15 in Rocchette di Fazio.

With the Jug Band Colline Metallifere we have been invited by Dario Canal together with other musicians (Giacomo Biancalana, Gianmarco Bonnici e Francesco Cecchetti) for a recording session at Shed 626 in Sesto Fiorentino, right next to Florence. Rocchette di Fazio is a hamlet close to Semproniano, which is be the main village in the surroundings of Rocchette di Fazio, and which will be the destination of the hike on Sunday June 15, during the first Maremme Cross-Border Hiking Festival.

The first historical trace of Semproniano’s existence dates back to before the year 1000AD, when it was mentioned as “Casale Simpronianu” in a document by the powerful San Salvatore abbey, although it was founded in Roman times by representatives of the Sempronio Gracco family. Its castle, strategically located between Mount Amiata, Saturnia, and the sea had a fundamental role in the passage from the Etruscan to the Roman culture, following the fall of the not-too-distant Vulci.
We are in the inner and wilder part of the hills between the rivers Albegna and Fiora, which in this area are at a higher elevation, as they flow from the feet of the former volcano which now became Mount Amiata.
Semproniano until 1963 was administratively part of the Roccalbegna territory. Today it has around one thousand inhabitants. Thanks to the activity of some local associations, including La Piazzoletta, supporting the festival, and the local administration, the village is one of the key actors in the effort to create a network of trails remaining accessible all year long for hikers in Maremma.

After the Bellafreddi trail we switch back from places to people with another one of the guests i for the first cross-border Maremme hiking festival. We are talking about Stefano Mecorio, olive oil maker, journalist, and author of “sentimental” hiking guides.
Stefano runs his olive oil press in Farnese, but is also a relentless hiker and one of the founder of the Consortium of independent hikers. His guides are a pleasent and mindful point of view on the meaning of hiking. He hiked with Irene Pellegrini from Farnese to Latera to guide her in the writing of A piedi nel far west and 111 luoghi delle maremme che devi proprio scoprire. In Rocchette di Fazio he will talk of his vision about hiking and walking.
